8 Things I Observed While at Disney
My 8 Thoughts on Leadership & Management While We Vacationed at Disney
This past month our family had the opportunity to visit Disney World in Florida, it was a great vacation with the family as we spent 6 days in the various parks and stayed on-site at the Port-Orleans Resort. Being in leadership, I find it difficult to not make leadership observation whenever I visit a new place. So, here are my top 8 observations while visiting Disney.
- People Management. On average, everybody walking into Disney is paying a minimum of $100; that’s a lot of money. Yet, people don’t seem to mind having their “personal space” invaded by others. Countless times throughout our vacation, the “cast members” of Disney asked us to: “Squeeze in”, “Move to the Center”, “Stand Shoulder to Shoulder”, “Move Here”, “You cannot stand there”, etc…. Here’s my take-a-way: People don’t mind being told to move around and make room for others if the show/experience is worth it.
- Get In Line. This is similar to the first point; but this is what I observed; people don’t mind standing in line as long as you give them something to do and make it worth the wait. What’s more, at Disney, the lines are even entertaining. Standing in line is interactive with stuff to look at or do. The sad truth is, a majority of your time at Disney will probably be spent standing in line (for a ride, for a show, for a gift, for a meal, for a table, for a tram, and for an exit ramp).
- Bow Down. 1000 years from now will future civilizations think we worshiped a Mouse? Seriously, when archaeologist discover the ruins of America, will they assume we worshiped a mouse because of Mickey’s image being on EVERYTHING there?
- Keep Them In The Park. I noticed that Disney has done a great job of staggering event, shows, parades and other activities throughout the day to keep people in the park. What’s more, when the parades start it is nearly impossible to get around the main parts of Disney. They have done a great job of keeping families in the park all day so they have to spend more $$$ in the park.
- Remember The Details. Disney does the big things with excellence and they still remember the details. The Birthday phone call to the room, kind greetings from Cast Members, clean bathrooms and walkways, and many more. Disney remembers that details are important.
- Epic and Grand. All of Disney is done on an Epic scale, and as I think about it, that’s exactly how God is with creation. He created EVERYTHING on an EPIC and GRAND scale while remember the fine details of life. Disney is a reflection back to God of His creative and grand work. As leaders, we should shoot for the same – doing things with excellence, on a grand scale, while remembering the details. That is how God created us – We are created in His image!
- Merry Christmas. This one took me by surprise. Time again, cast members said “merry Christmas” to us after purchases or after leaving the park or an event. It caught me off guard because of the “politically correct” world we seem to live in. Don’t get me wrong, I am not offended if someone says “happy Holidays” to me – it’s not a big deal. However, I was glad to see that the cast members didn’t feel they had to be “politically correct” either.
- High Energy. Okay, truth be told, I got a little ticked off on one of the days at Disney. I didn’t get to do what I wanted to do (here’s the scene: there was a parade going on and I wanted to get back to my family. A cast member refused to let me through to get back to them. I then developed a big attitude.) Well, long story short, Tweedledee and Tweedledum walked up to me and gave me a big hug – I couldn’t help but laugh and smile. Disney knows how to bring the energy!
