How I Lost 100 lbs. in 2016
This is the story of how I lost 100 lbs. in 2016.
From the beginning, I want to tell you that the key to major weight loss is perseverance. You stick with any diet and exercise program long enough and you’ll see results. For perseverance, you need both personal discipline and accountability. You can’t do the journey alone. You need to find family or friends who can help and motivate you to keep working on your health when you feel like giving up.
Since I had decided at the beginning of the year to work on my health because of my upcoming wedding, I tried a method that had been suggested to me by a friend the year before. It is called intermittent fasting. There are several different ways to do intermittent fasting, but the basic idea is to fast most of the day (16-18 hours), and only eat during a small portion of the day (6-8 hours).
I personally chose to eat between 10 AM and 6 PM. Nothing before, nothing after. I focused on proteins and healthy fats, trying to cut out most sugars and high carb foods (like soda and desserts). I also joined a gym and started exercising occasionally. Between the end of January and the end of April I managed to lose just over 30 lbs.
By the end of April, I knew I needed a program with a little more structure and accountability. The intermittent fasting was working, but I didn’t really want to continue it long-term.

So at the beginning of May, I joined Take Shape For Life, also called Optavia (You can access their homepage here: http://www.tsfl.com/index.jsp). My mom, Reverie Collins, had been with the program for about 5 months by that point and had lost around 60 lbs. already. She had become a health coach, and I became one of her first clients.
I had watched my mom struggle with her health for years, and so when she joined this program and had such success with it, I started considering it. I was so proud of her for how she stuck with it and lost so much weight and began to be healthy.
And so I too joined this optimal health program. It’s not a diet. It’s about learning to eat and live right. It’s about drinking the proper amounts of water, getting sufficient sleep, and increasing my energy by eating the right amounts of protein, healthy fats, and carbs.
It’s a lifestyle, not a diet. It’s about making healthy choices. And because of this change in my thinking, I’m able to continue to make healthy choices, lose weight, and get in better shape even though I’m transitioning out of the program. I have learned the habits that I can continue to use for the rest of my life to take care of my body and to enjoy a healthy life.
