There is no doubt that the use of social media can be a GOOD thing AND a BAD thing. Chances are either you spend too much time on social media or you know someone who does. In fact, when you mix social media and marriage together there will probably be two big differences of opinions on how the other person should use it. So for today’s post, I would like to give five small reminders that can have a big impact in your relationships when approaching the issue of social media as a couple. (Be sure to comment on this post if you have other ideas about how to use social media wisely).
As a Couple, SHARE YOUR PASSWORD
If you can’t share your password with your spouse then you probably shouldn’t be on social media. There should be nothing to hide from your spouse.
IT’s NOT A PLACE TO RANT
If you have a problem with your spouse (or anyone else for that matter) take it up with them, in private. Social media is not the location to take care of your relationship issues. I know celebrities do it there and even some politicians but if we have an issue with someone we need to talk to them in person.
BE HONEST AND BE REAL
Social media is no place to show off your fake self and it is not a place to live a secret life. Anything you share on social media should be able to be seen by your spouse. And what’s more, the self you project on social media needs to be the real you. It’s okay to have a bad day and just say; “Hey friends, my life sucks today, could you pray for me. If you want specifics send me a DM.” Your life is not perfect, nobody’s life is. Healthy people know how to be honest with themselves and others about the good and bad parts of them.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FRIENDS WITH EVERYONE
Listen, if you are secretly fantasizing about some friend on Facebook or Instagram then you need to STOP following them. This is not healthy for you or your real-life relationship. Have personal boundaries and have accountability with who you are friends with on social media.
HAVE FUN
Social media can be an escape but it should not control you and your life. If you have to check your account right now then it might be controlling you. Social media should be fun and interactive. It should not cause stress if someone didn’t give you the response you were looking for. So go ahead and post the funny GIF! Do it, but don’t place expectations on it; it will only bring you down.
WHAT AM I MISSING?
