What I Tell Young Leaders Who Feel Lost
Let’s face it—leadership can feel like a lonely, confusing road, especially when you’re just getting started. You’re carrying expectations (yours and everyone else’s), navigating decisions without a roadmap, and trying to make a meaningful impact… all while wondering, “Am I even on the right path?”
If that’s you—take a breath. You’re not alone. And you’re not failing. You’re learning.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching young leaders in business, ministry, and life. Many of them have one thing in common: they’re driven—but uncertain. And that’s actually a powerful starting point.
Here’s what I tell them:
1. Get Clear on Your Strengths and Passions
You don’t need to have it all figured out. But you do need a compass. Start by asking:
- What energizes me?
- Where do people consistently affirm my gifts?
- What drains me (and why)?
Geoff Smart and Randy Street, in their book Who: The A Method for Hiring, say this:
“Success starts with the who. If you get the right who, the what becomes a lot easier.”
That includes YOU. The right who isn’t just for your team—it’s for yourself. Know who you are first.
2. Surround Yourself with the Right People
Isolation is the enemy of clarity. Find mentors, coaches, and peer-level leaders who challenge you and speak truth with grace.
“Leaders who lack the discipline to vet their advisors risk making decisions based on poor counsel,” Smart and Street warn.
Good input leads to better decisions. Don’t fly solo.
3. Take One Brave Step at a Time
Clarity often follows action—not the other way around. Waiting for perfect direction can become the enemy of meaningful progress.
Ask yourself:
- What’s one decision I can make this week that moves me toward purpose?
- What’s one thing I’ve been avoiding that needs my attention?
Build momentum with small, intentional choices.
4. Build Character Before Competency
You can learn skills. You can gain experience. But character? That’s the foundation. It’s what sustains you when the pressure is on.
Be the kind of leader people trust—not just follow.
5. Invite Coaching Into the Process
You don’t need to figure this out alone. If you’re a young leader feeling uncertain, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
As a certified life and leadership coach, I help driven people like you gain clarity, strengthen relationships, and lead with confidence. Let’s define your next step—and build a plan to get there.
